Day 16 – Into Germany

The sun was shining this morning in Hirtshals, Denmark.

With a long journey ahead, it was soon time to get going.

It turns out that the Sat Nav connector fix didn’t like motorway speeds. So a more substantial deployment of duct tape was called for 😂

That fix has lasted all day ☺️

I was keen to break up the motorway driving, so did a little detour to Aarhus* in Denmark.

*I make no apologies for the amount of “Madness – Our House” references 😂

On the way I pulled over to layer up for wet weather. There were some seriously stormy clouds on the horizon. Luckily it was mostly cold, with a little rain, rather than a lot of rain! The photo below doesn’t convey the storm vibes that were present 😂

I had no idea what to expect from Aarhus as it was a completely spontaneous visit. But to miss it would be…that’s right….madness 😉

Near to where I parked my bike I spotted a hot chocolate sign, so headed to the door. The place is Cavu, it wasn’t quite “in the middle of our street”.

It was a lovely cafe serving a variety of tasty sounding food and drinks. I opted for the Pulled Beef Benedict (a twist on the usual Eggs Benedict, but with beef brisket) and a hot chocolate.

The photo is rubbish, but the food was fab.

I did a little walking circuit of the centre, just to get a feel for the place. It has a lot of character. I would definitely return to explore more.

I walked around Vor Frue Kirke (Our Lady Church). It looked impressive, and I have since found out that it has a crypt to explore too! I definitely had “such a fine time, such a happy time” in Aarhus.

But onwards we must go! I’ve “got a date to keep, I can’t hang around”.

The ride from Aarhus was fine. Although getting out of Aarhus was slow! There was a lot of traffic, both out of the city and onto the connecting motorway. There were lots of cyclists too. Often queuing parallel to the cars, waiting for their traffic lights to change.

I left Aarhus at around 3pm.

I was due to arrive at my destination at around 7pm.

Much tarmac was covered. The storm was behind me now and looked seriously imposing in my bike mirrors.

It was a long road to Kaltenkirchen, my base for tonight.

It was getting dark as I rode the last hour or so, but that was fine. I crossed into Germany at around 6pm.

Today I rode 515.6km (or 320 miles or 45,912.7 New London Routemaster buses)

Thanks for reading Day 16. Tomorrow I’ll be heading to Essen, ready for the Spiel boardgame event on Thursday! ☺️
